Along the Dianpu River in Shanghai

2026
Pencil on paper
300cm x 40cm

Artwork Description:

Tracing the Dianpu river from Zhujiajiao to the Huangpu River, this work draws on a one-month artist residency to link together riverside landscapes, everyday observations, and fragments of communal living into a reflection on time, space, and interpersonal relations.

Structured around the lunar cycle, the work adopts the phases of the moon as its temporal framework. As the journey moves from Shanghai's suburban edges toward the urban centre, the waxing and waning moon parallels the rhythms of human relationships from encounter and intimacy to separation. Moonlight renders time perceptible, while its reflection on the moving surface of the river remains unstable, becoming a metaphor for the fluidity of memory and lived experience.

The work considers the residency as a temporary condition of living together, in which individuals from different places come to share time, space, and artistic practice before dispersing again. Through the recurring rhythms of the river and the moon, it reflects on how encounters and departures shape the temporal dimension of human relationships, and how fleeting moments of coexistence continue to resonate beyond their duration.
